Trauma Therapy, EMDR Therapy & Somatic Experiencing

Hi there! I’m Sarah Herstich.

I’m a trauma therapist in Pennsylvania.

I’m also the owner and founder of Reclaim Therapy. I specialize in treating PTSD, Complex PTSD, body image and disordered eating. I also provide supervision and consultation for therapists looking for eating disorder training and body image training.

Sarah Herstich provides trauma therapy in Pennsylvania, somatic experiencing and is an eating disorder therapist at Reclaim Therapy

Here’s what I want you to know:

ALL of you is welcome here.

Your messy, your struggles, your resistance, your strengths, your dreams, your fears, your body…

And everything in between.

I believe that it’s your right to reclaim your relationship with yourself.

To reclaim your life from shame and disconnection.

Throughout our lives we’re been taught over and over again that our bodies can’t possibly be trusted.

That we have to control them, and ourselves, to fit in.

To find belonging. To be more palatable. To be successful. To find worth and ‘beauty’.

If you’re here, you likely know that all the grasping for that control has left you feeling the exact opposite.

And you’re tired.

Tired of shame, blame, flashbacks and debilitating self-doubt.

Tired of people pleasing and the seemingly endless quest for perfection.

Tired of feeling like you’ll never be able to fully live your life until you get this food and body stuff figured out.

Tired of putting your trust in everyone and everything outside yourself.

Tired of feeling disconnected from your hungers, your emotions and your needs.

Tired of feeling like you, and your body, are a problem that need to be solved.

I believe that you, and your body, know exactly what you, and it, needs.

But along the way, things have gotten in the way of you feeling, listening to and really trusting in yourself.

From trauma(s), body-shame and dieting cycles, to living in a culture obsessed with productivity, status, fitness and thinness… there are so many valid reasons why you’re here.

My goal is to support the people I work alongside to reclaim pieces of that trust.

On their own terms.

I’m not interested in reinforcing the cultural narrative that I, or anyone else, knows what’s right for you.

Or, that I, or anyone else, has an answer that doesn’t already exist inside of you.

I believe that our bodies hold the wisdom and capacity that is needed to heal from trauma, body-shame and/or disordered eating.

And, sometimes we need a little support to access that wisdom and to expand that capacity.

In my work with clients my hope is that together we can feel into the stories and events that have gotten them to this point.

And, start doing the hard and brave work of healing. Of reprocessing negative self-beliefs, emotionally overwhelming experiences and moving toward an embodied way of living.

This could look like:

  • Healing from personal trauma(s)

  • I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and am trained in EMDR.

  • Being curious about the cultural beliefs and practices that have interrupted your ability to feel free to live in your body in the here and now.

  • Creating, accessing and deepening into the safety of the here and now.

  • Learning and practicing how to feel connected to and safe in your body.

  • Being curious about how to make sense of the wisdom in the way you’ve coped with difficult emotions and experiences.

  • Renegotiating traumatic, or emotionally overwhelming experiences.

  • How to find new ways of coping- ways that will be supportive of your recovery from disordered eating, trauma, diet-culture and body-hate.

Here’s a Little More About Me and How I Practice

I've battled with body image and have a history of being caught in the tight grip of an eating disorder and obsession with exercise. And, I’ve been through the painful process of grieving the loss of disordered eating and the behaviors that had seemingly kept me safe and contained.

There was and is freedom on the other side.

Discovering Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size planted the initial seeds in my mind to heal my relationship with food and my body. It has been an evolutionary process, a journey into understanding the workings of my body, deeply embedded survival responses and a depth of work I didn’t know was possible.

➞My practice is anti-racist, feminist, fat-positive and lgbtqi+ affirming.

Bodies are political. I believe that in order for all of us to be free, we must address and advocate for the end of oppression of ALL bodies.

➞I’m a human first, therapist second.

I view my clients as human- not a diagnosis. I don’t pathologize behaviors or ways of coping. I want all of the people I work with to know that I too, as a human, struggle, experience joy, pleasure and pain. I believe that when we connect as humans first, radically healing relationships can be be built.

➞I love and care about the amazing people I work with.

Yes, I think of them between sessions, after they’ve moved on, when they’re in times of great struggle and when they’re seriously kicking ass. And, I will work my ass off to make sure they feel safe, heard, trusted and respected.

➞The work I do is centered around your lived experience in your body and in your life.

I believe that you get to decide what your recovery looks like. What brings you joy and pleasure. What parts of diet-culture you’re willing or ready to divest from. What freedom from disordered eating and body-loathing looks like for you.

➞I will always uphold the belief that you are deserving (and capable) of freedom and healing.

From the pain of your trauma(s), from disordered eating and body-hate, from diet-culture, from oppression. And, I will always honor the evolutionary process of what you believe healing looks like for you- in your body and your life.
